Annual Volunteer Application - Positions



The ALA Chairperson oversees the entire ALA program planning and implementation and event execution.
Alumni Advisors coordinate reunions, HOBY alumni clubs, civic service involvement, CLeWs, as well as ongoing leadership development.
This person works with the Alumni Committee that plans and executes reunions, service projects, and other events; and interacts with Alumni Advisor.

Assistant to designated project coach(es), responsibilities vary but will focus on providing ideas, suggestions and inspiration to ALA participants in the project action planning process. Must be 20 – 22 years of age or a junior or senior in college.
Assistant to the WLC Chair
Coordinates all multimedia support for the program including displaying PowerPoints, prezis, and videos. Manages the sound board, presentation laptops, LCD projectors, microphones and all necessary peripherals. Must have HOBY volunteer experience and be over 19 years of age.
CLeW Chairperson is the person in charge of producing one CLeW.
This individual carries out many of the planning and execution responsibilities of the CLeW under the supervision of a CLeW Chairperson.
CLeW Director sits on the corporate board and oversees all CLeWs within a site.
This individual carries out many of the planning and execution responsibilities of the CLeW under the supervision of a CLeW Chairperson.
Corporate Board Member is a person with voting rights on the corporate board who participates in corporate board business and committees.
The Corporate Board President oversee all activities conducted in their designated area. Ensure that all volunteers are properly trained and are held accountable for the responsibilities to which they have been assigned.
Corporate Booard Secretary is a person with voting rights on the corporate board and maintains the bylaws and affiliate aggreement. Takes notes during committee meetings, and distributes all communication.
Corporate Board Treasurer is a person with voting rights on the Corporate board who manages the finances and accounts and helps to ensure affiliate financial stability.
Corporate Board Vice President is a voting member of the corporate board that covers in the absence of the Corporate Board President. This position also allows for potential successors to receive important training for the President role and creates a clear line of succession in the organization.
Provides the inspiration for and coordinates the theme, mood, and overall tone of the program in close consultation with the Vice-Chair of Program and ALA Chair. Requires past Leadership Seminar Director of Program experience or Program Team experience and must be over 21 years of age.
Director of Community Service works with the Director of Program to integrate the required Leadership for Service components into the seminar schedule, including the community service project conducted at the seminar.
Director of Facilitators is responsible for recruiting, training, and supervising the adult facilitators.
Coordinates with representatives from the retreat center and off-site locations for all facility related requirements, assignments, circumstances and issues. Requires a moderate amount of advance work. Must have previous HOBY volunteer experience, preferably on an operations team, and be over 21 years of age.
Director of Fundraising creates a budget and a comprehensive fundraising plan for the seminar, listing all potential sources for funding including corporations, service and cooperating organizations, and gift-in-kind contributions. At the completion of the fundraising efforts, the committee should have generated funds of at least 5% in excess of expenditures.
Director of Information Technology
Director of Junior Staff is responsible for recruiting, training, and supervising the Junior Staff = Volunteers under age 21.
Director of Operations and Facilities negotiates the best possible contract with the host facility, and to ensure smooth flow of logistics during the seminar. The Director of Operations & Facilities makes arrangements for all lodging rooms, meals, meeting rooms, and audio visual needs.
Director of Programs is responsible for selecting speakers from prominent business and community leaders, and organizing the seminar’s schedule of events to include all required curriculum elements.
Director of Communications/Public Relatons seeks media coverage for the seminar weekend and/or gets stories published in local papers about individual Ambassadors. The Director of Public Relations also works closely with the Director of Fundraising to develop local promotional material to be used in fundraising efforts. The Director of PR also plays the lead role in developing the seminar program booklet, ensuring the inclusion of all required material.
Responsible for e-newsletter, communications, and other publications during the ALA.
Director of Recruitment/Ambassador Relations ensures attainment of the recruitment goal by coordinating the efforts of school contacts and follow up to get students registered to attend the seminar. Oversees the recruitment team. This Director is also responsible for pre-seminar communications with students and pre-seminar materials paperwork.
Director of Service and Cooperating Organizations provides assistance in soliciting local clubs/chapters for financial support, volunteer resources, student recruitment, and other involvement with the seminar.
The Director of Special Services is responsible for any special services as assigned. These might include securing gift-in-kind contributions, conducting student check-in at the seminar, organizing optional religious services, conducting thank you letter writing, and arranging for medical procedures to be followed.
Director of Transportation coordinates off site transportation during the Leadership seminar usually for the Leadership For Service project, business site visits, or state capital visits.
Coordinates transportation, evaluation, HOBY Store, Team Alumni and other assigned activities. Coordinates all volunteer, participant and guest transportation. Requires a moderate amount of advance work. Must have previous HOBY volunteer experience and be over 25 years of age.
Facilitators directly oversee a small group of ambassadors during the Leadership Seminar weekend and facilitate their learning.

Supports Vice-Chair of Project Coaches and serves as an Administrator for and facilitates the use of various technologies and the ALA Facebook Group. Requires some advance and post-ALA work for up to one year following the ALA. Must be available to be on call during the ALA. Must be at least 18 years of age.
International Trip Chaperone
Junior Staff Volunteers assist with seemless transitions during the Leadership Seminar activities, program execution, seminar operations, and keeping the overall attitude and enviroment positive.
Junior Staff/Team Alumni assist with seemless transitions during the Leadership Seminar activities, program execution, seminar operations, and keeping the overall attitude and enviroment positive.
Leadership Seminar Chairperson (LSC) is responsible for all aspects of the Leadership Seminar. The LSC plays the lead role in coordinating the seminar committee efforts and ensuring committee assignments are completed in a timely fashion.
Leadership Seminar Committee Member works on the planning of the Leadership seminar and on any onsite operations or seminar needs.
Leadership Seminar Treasurer maintains the budget and supervises all expenses incurred at the local Leadership seminar.
Leadership Seminar Vice-Chairperson position allows potential successors to receive important training for the LSC role and creates a clear line of succession in the organization.
Nurse/Medic/EMT
Any other volunteer position not listed falls into this category. Program coordinators, WLC Coordinator, Organizational Liasons, Essay Coordinators, etc.
Photographer/Audio Visual/Videographer
Supports overall program development; responsible for speaker and panelist coordination and communication and responsible for all of the program curriculum files. Must have HOBY volunteer experience and be over 19 years of age.
Supports the Vice Chair of Program by coordinating specific program elements. Must have HOBY volunteer experience and community service or service-learning project coordination experience and be over 21 years of age.
Leads a group of approximately 7-9 participants through and following the ALA experience. This position is one part HOBY facilitator, one part teacher, and one part project manager/administrator. Must be over 25.
Psychologist / Counselor at a Seminar
Regional Project Director is an experienced volunteer that works with a specific Director of National Programs on behalf of a particular region to execute projects as assigned depending on the current needs.
Social Media Manager - Primary administrator for Social Media Channels for the site. Handles content, posting, and monitoring for appropriateness.
Spearker or Presenter at a Seminar
Training Institute Volunteer
Works directly with the Tour Group Leader and students to implement the post-ALA tour of event location. Must be 25 years old and have HOBY volunteer experience,
Plans and implements the two-day post ALA tour for students. Works directly with HOBY’s Sr. Director of Programs to plan the tour activities and logistics. Must be over 25 years old and have HOBY volunteer experience.
Vice Chair, Ambassador Safety

Coordinates, directs and advises the operations team; executes and implements the logistical policies and procedures for the event. Requires past Leadership Seminar Chair (LSC) or Director of Operation experience and must be over 25 years of age.
Seeks media coverage for the ALA and/or gets stories published about individual Project Managers. Works closely with the Director of PR and Marketing and assists in developing the program booklet and other marketing tools.
Coordinates, directs and advises the program team to develop and execute the ALA program in close consultation with the ALA Chair. Requires past HOBY Leadership Seminar Chair (LSC) or Leadership Seminar Director of Program experience and must be over 25 years of age.
Coordinates, directs and advises the project coach team including volunteer recruitment, selection, pre-ALA training, and all staff onsite orientation and training. Must be over 25 years of age with previous HOBY Leadership Seminar Chair (LSC) and project management experience.
